Country stores,  located strategically along America's back roads,  kept travelers of the 19th and early 20th centuries well stocked for picnics.   Featuring "simple country pleasures",  the Blue Churn Country Store dishes up jams,  cheese,  and penny candy along with good,  old fashioned customer service.   This building was erected in the 1830's and has operated as a general store,  under different names and owners,  ever since.

This charming firehouse is being restored to its original 1904 appearance.   It was the last firehouse in the city to have horses and served the city for nearly three-quarters of a century.   It was left abandoned for eight years until the current owner rescued it from the wrecker's ball.   Today it is on several historic registers.

The tradition of wood carving has been kept alive by a handful of craftsmen.   Before industrialization,  wood carving and working with hand tools was the way of furniture construction.   Bill Kallberg and his wife,  Carol,  have run this business for nine years.   Bill's beautiful hand carved fireplace mantels grace many homes in the region,  includiing Faline's.

Is one of New England's oldest schoolhouses,  operating from 1789 to 1942.   Today it is unique classroom where students experience a typical 19th century school day.   They dress in costumes representing the 1700's and 1800's and are allowed to bring only the type of foods eaten for lunch during those years.   Using "primers" of old and writing with ink and quill,  they do daily lessons,  and play games of yesteryear.   Take your own tour of Bullet Hill when you visit southwestern Connecticut.
