Constructed in 1891 and built on an open water caisson, this coffee pot shaped 35 foot red conical tower displays a large Fresnel lens and fog bell, used to warn ships away from the dangerous shoal of sand and clay called the Middle Ground.

This unique and interesting lighthouse has served as a beacon for sailors and boaters in the Upper Chesapeake Bay for over 160 years. It is the oldest continuously operated lighthouse in the State of Maryland.

The beautiful South Bass Island Lighthouse was built in 1892 on a rugged piece of shoreline facing the blue expanse of Lake Erie. In 1962 the lighthouse was taken out of service and purchased by Ohio State University. The three-story brick house is currently used as a private residence.

It stands 165 feet above sea level, and was built during 1857 and 1858. "Old Barney" was first lit on January 1, 1859 and was extinguished January 1, 1944. Ownership of the lighthouse was transferred to the State of New Jersey in 1926.
